GEO

GEO, short for generative engine optimization, is the work of getting your product named in the answers AI tools give when buyers ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews for a tool like yours.

Also called generative engine optimization

It’s a close cousin of SEO, search engine optimization. SEO aims for a good place in Google’s list of results. GEO aims for a mention inside the answer itself.

You may have heard it called GEO or AEO. It’s the same idea, and nobody has settled on one name. Among marketers, “generative engine optimization” was searched about 54,300 times worldwide in January 2026, against about 30,000 for “answer engine optimization” (Similarweb). It’s new to most people. In a survey of US marketers, 33% rated their understanding of GEO as good or expert, against 72% for SEO (Search Engine Land).

The work itself is mostly plain: get onto the “best of” lists and review sites AI tools read, make sure AI crawlers can read your pricing page and docs, and keep your product’s facts correct everywhere they appear. We call it AI visibility, because that’s what it is: whether AI tools name your product when a buyer asks.
